IEEE Computer Society's Richard E. Merwin award has just been granted to our very own Farhad Khan. Congratulations to Farhad for winning such a prestigious award!!! We are very pleased that Farhad has been acknowledged for all of his hard work as Chair of the Computer Society Chapter. This not only reflects well on the chapter but the branch as a whole. IEEE Carleton University is proud to announce the launch of IEEE Computer Society Chapter this Summer. The Computer Society Chapter will extend the activities of the student brach to the academic streams like Computer Systems Engineering, Software Engineering and Computer Science. Chaired by Farhad Khan, Computer Systems Engineering III, and Professor Trevor Pearce, Dept. of Systems and Computer Engineering as the Faculty Advisor, the chapter will start it's activities through administering free Linux tutorials for the Engineering students, organizing a first year programming contest and possibly conducting some research work on RFID.

Dr. Calvin Plett, Associate Professor at the Department of Electronics, has been awarded the 2006 IEEE Outstanding Branch Counselor Award. The award aims to recognize the efforts of Branch Counselors whose dedication and efforts exemplify the IEEE's commitment to educational, personal, professional and technical developments of students. The award is presented annually and carries a monetary prize and personalized certificate. There were seven recipients of the award worldwide. Dr. Plett joined the Department of Electronics at Carleton University in 1989. He received a B.A.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Waterloo (1982) and a M.Eng (1986) and Ph.D. (1991) degrees from Carleton University. Before joining Carleton, he worked in industry for many companies including the Atomic Energy of Canada, Xerox and Bell-Northern Research. He has been the counselor of the IEEE Carleton Student Branch for 15 years.

We have successfully come to an end of another successful year at the IEEE. IEEE office will be closed until next fall. Thanks to all the volunteers for their dedicated effort to keep office running even in such a busy schedule. We wish everyone a good luck on exams and a nice summer. The new executive team will take over all responsibilities starting May 2006.

The official e-mail address of IEEE Carleton University has been changed from ieee-at-doe-dot-carleton-dot-ca to the new sb-dot-carleton-at-ieee-dot-org. All correspondance should be directed to this new e-mail address from now on. However, the old address will still be kept active for a short period of time to allow a smooth transition.

IEEE memberships are sold twice a year - in the beginning of the Fall and Winter semesters. In Fall, full year memberships are sold for the following year from Jan to Dec. In the Winter, only half-year memberships are sold. For the IEEE 2004 membership, the regular price for full-year membership is $42 and the six-month membership is $25. There is a promotional discount during the first month of term (i.e. September and January) For Fall: 1 year membership is $35. For Winter: Prices will be notified. The IEEE Membership is now filled online at www.ieee.org and instructions are posted in the office. In order to receive the discount special rate, the applicant must fill out the membership form at the office, choose cash as the payment option, and print out a copy in the office. Then, the printed form and cash is given to the volunteer in charge of the office, who in return provides a receipt. IEEE Carleton Student Branch has won the George Armitage Outstanding Student Branch Award for 2003 for Exceptional achivements in organizing professional and technical events that resulted in a signicant increase in student membership!
